Tie-Dye Rainbow Swirls

I love anything tie dyed and have lots of clothes & accessories covered in the print so thought it was about time I - tried - to get my own tie-dye on before my festival season starts at Secret Garden Party this weekend. I've never tie-dyed or even dyed any of my clothes so was preparing for a colourful disaster.. but practice makes perfect..

I watched a few tutorials on youtube and read some instructables to find out exactly what was needed and headed down to Berwick Street in Soho to get all the equipment. I bought 1x1 metre of cotton to make the cape from one of the many fabric shops down there (cant remember which one, cost about £10) then went to Cowling & Wilcox to buy all the squeezy bottles (£1 each), elastic bands, and lots of Dylon dye (£3 each), the colours I used are Flamingo Pink, Sunflower Yellow, China Blue, Goldfish Orange and Intense Violet.. the primary colours mix so you don't really need to buy colours like orange, green and purple as if you overlap the yellows, blues and pink/reds the colours change... like the green on my cape. I didn't know this until after I had bought all the dye... but if you do buy the secondary colours they do come out brighter if you apply them directly onto the fabric rather than mixing to make them..

Once I had twisted my cotton into a pie and tied it up with elastic bands to create 6 sections, I put all the colours on each section of the pie.. yellow, orange, blue, pink, purple and blue & yellow mixed (green).... I then put the dyed, cotton pie into a plastic bag and left it for about 12 hours to soak in...

The exciting part is taking it all out of the elastic bands and opening it all up to find swirly rainbow loveliness.. once the cotton sheet had all dried I folded it and cut a semi circle hole so that it can go over my head ready & on ready to festival dance around in... :) x

These are the videos & instructions I followed, enjoy!

Lauren Baker Living Dead Skull Art Workshop at the Tate Modern

Lauren Baker hosts ‘Living Dead’ a skull art workshop as part of the Oxymoron Event by Tate Collectives at the Tate Modern

Friday 13th July 2012, 06:00pm – 09:00pm at Tate Modern, Bankside, London

I posted about Lauren's beautiful skull art and mosaic work a few months back, since then Lauren has continued to spread her creative love with exhibitions showcasing her work over in New York and closer to home at the Star of Kings - who now have her embellished deer skulls hanging from their walls for all the world to see. She has also had her art showcased at the Blue Door Gallery in New York and the Electric Blue Gallery in London. Exciting things lay ahead for Lauren, as well as the skull art workshop coming up, her skull art is going to feature in George Michael's newest music video coming out this summer :)

This Friday, Lauren Baker is hosting a skull art workshop at Tate Modern as part of Oxymoron,  an evening of music, art and artist-led workshops led by the Tate Collectives and inspired by the current Damien Hirst exhibition. Particiapants in the workshop will get to enter a bizarre, beautiful world of skull art where animal and human skulls are dramatically embellished and adorned by themselves painting & embellishing a 3D human cast skull, which will become part of a Tate Collective online art exhibition.

Lauren's commitment to sourcing skulls ethically means never buying the skulls of animals killed for sport, she maintains strong links with The Deer Society which ensures deer flourish in harmony in their environment! :)

If you fancy a Friday evening getting creative and discovering, new, unique art, then this workshop is for you...

Summer Colour Dreaming

Some of my favourite outfits from the summer catwalk shows, so lovely to look at on dull grey London days like today. Especially loving Vivienne Westwood's huge tassel earrings, Dolce & Gabbana & Pucci's hippy vibes, floral sequins from Ashish, embellishment from James Long & pretty much everything by Custo Barcelona - tie dye, prisms, aztec patterns & amazing structured swimwear & of course, Meadham Kirchhoff for pure fun and candyfloss heaven, neon orange moustache anyone? YES.
